canton ymca site visit

On Wednesday September 14th our sports administration class visited the Canton YMCA for our first site visit. In our site visit we sat in a classroom and recieved information on YMCA the organization and how the Canton YMCA is ran. We walked thru the lobby area where members checked in. We were shown the indoor pool where aquatic classes are taken, the basketball gym where full court basketball is played on Tuesday nights. There was also an indoor track facility so people could run and a gym with different weight machines and treadmills. You could be a lifeguard, teacher of a class, or work on the staff handling marketing and memberships. What I learned from the site visit is that the Canton YMCA is involved greatly in the community and that there are over 9,000 members at the Canton YMCA alone.

Guest Speaker Summary 2

September 7th,2010 Vic Mitchell came in and spoke to our class. He is the women's basketball coach at Shorter and also serves as the associate athletic director. His first job was as the women's basketball's coach at Reinhardt when it was a junior college. He got his undergraduate degree at UGA and served as a graduate assistant in the early 1980's. He is from southwestern Georgia and he spent six years at Reinhardt until moving on to Shorter. He coached slow pitch softball and started up women's cross country and women's golf. One of his points that struck me the most was that you should research the job before applying and make sure its a place you can be succesful. At Shorter they have to turn in an athletic budget and that Shorter uses athletics to increase revenue and bring in profits for the school. He also said you have to be able delegate and let the coaches do their jobs instead of trying to micro manage. Fundraising is significant to sustaining a program.

guest speaker summary

Tuesday in class Peggy Feerhrey came in and spoke in our sports administration class. She is the career services director at Reinhardt University. She talked about the importance of finding a good internship and take assesements to find out what we are good in and what we should do. For a person like me trying to narrow down what I want to do this is important. She also talked about the importance of our resumes. They need to look professional and look good. She talked of two ways of doing this putting your work expierience in chrononological order and putting the things about you that stand out at the top of the resume. While putting the weaker things at the bottom such as my education and GPA. I had already heard her speak to my principles of marketing class and it was the same exact speech.
